How To Choose Isolation Gown

Jun 15,2016

Isolation gowns are personal protective clothing for healthcare workers or patients. It protects healthcare workers from the spread of microorganisms, body fluids and particulates. In addition, healthcare workers wearing isolation gowns can provide a sterile or cleaner environment for patient care.

Some common terms mentioned for isolation gowns include isolation gowns, surgical isolation gowns, non-surgical gowns, surgical gowns and operating room gowns.

The defined level of protection are as follows:

Level 1: minimal risk, e.g. for basic care, standard isolation, visitor isolation gowns or standard medical units

Level 2: Low risk, e.g. for use during blood draws, suturing, intensive care units (ICU) or pathology laboratories

Level 3: Moderate risk, such as for arterial blood draws, insertion of intravenous (IV) lines, emergency room trauma cases, or caustic chemical experiments

Level 4: High risk, e.g. for prolonged, high-risk procedures, when pathogen resistance is required or when infectious disease (non-airborne) is suspected When selecting an isolation gown, regardless of how the product is named (isolation gown, surgical gown, lab coat), look for a gown with the required level of protection based on the above risk level.
