How To Distinguish Civilian Masks From Medical Masks

Nov 18,2018

There are many standards for "civilian masks" and "medical masks", but the most important difference is that civilian masks generally emphasize "particulate matter" filtration efficiency, while medical masks generally emphasize "bacterial filtration efficiency".

1. KN95 mask: "KN" is actually just a code name. This code name "KN" is dedicated to China. It means a type of mask "only used to filter non-oily particles" (correspondingly, there is also a type of mask that can The mask code for "filtering non-oily and oily particles" is KP, such as KP95 masks, but it is not common in life), and the national standard implemented is GB2626, which is a "civilian mask" standard. In this standard, three grades are defined according to the different particle filtration efficiency:

KN90: ≥90%

KN95: ≥95%

KN100: ≥99.97%

Therefore, generally speaking, "KN95 mask" means: a non-medical mask with a "particulate matter" filtration efficiency ≥95% produced according to the Chinese civil mask standard GB2626. (Special note: This has nothing to do with N95 masks in the United States. N95 is a non-medical mask with a "particulate matter" filtration efficiency of ≥95% produced according to the US NIOSH standard. There are also N99 (≥99%) and N100 ( ≥99.7%) of these 2 higher filtering levels)

2. FFP level. Most people think that FFP2 is for civilian use and FFP3 is for medical use, but this is not true. The FFP grade is only the "particulate matter" filtration grade mark in the European "Civilian Mask Testing Standard" EN149. There are three filtration efficiencies:

FFP1(P1): ≥80%

FFP2(P2): ≥94%

FFP3(P3): ≥97%

That is to say, no matter FFP2 or FFP3, it means "particulate filtration level", and both civil and medical can do the corresponding detection and make the corresponding identification in the case of passing.

What is the European standard for medical masks? It is EN14683. There is no filter level in this standard, only the mask level, which are:

Type I

Type II

Type II R

Therefore, if a European customer mentions that they want to buy a mask in the future, they must first determine whether it is "civilian" or "medical". The easiest way is to confirm with the customer whether the mask standard is EN149 or EN14683. If the customer simply talks about FFP2 and FFP3, he must confirm with the customer. It is best to literacy and popularize the knowledge of masks for the customer.

Also explain some commonly used descriptions:

KN95-FFP2: Indicates that the "particulate matter" filtration efficiency produced according to the Chinese civil mask standard GB2626 is ≥95%, and has passed the European EN149 test to identify the civil mask with a filtration level of FFP2

KN95-FFP3: Indicates that the "particulate matter" filtration efficiency produced according to the Chinese civil mask standard GB2626 is ≥95%, and has passed the European EN149 test to identify the civil mask with a filtration level of FFP3

KN95-Type II: Indicates that the filtration efficiency of "particulate matter" produced according to the Chinese civil mask standard GB2626 is ≥95%, and the "medical mask" that has passed the European EN14683 test and identification level is Type II

Therefore, after reading the above content, everyone should also be clear about the meaning of these professional terms. In some disputes, most of them should be foreign customers and some domestic suppliers who mistakenly interpret the conventional FFP3 masks as "medical masks" for use. Therefore, determining the inspection standard of the required mask is the key to judging whether the mask is "civilian" or "medical".

Masks exported to the United States, whether medical or not, must be registered with the FDA. Among them, non-medical products need to pass NOISH certification, and medical products need to pass ASTM F2100 certification.
